This is a guest post by Lindsay from Unconventional Marketing Blog that specializes in guerilla marketing ideas.
TV is a total waste of time, not to mention the commercials that interrupt you at least every five minutes. TV is slowly becoming a thing of the past as more and more young people turn to the Internet to get their information and television shows are available either online or in DVD format. If there is a show you really like, or a sporting event you absolutely have to watch, you can always catch it online, rent or buy the series or catch the game at a bar, gym or friend’s house.
Here’s a challenge for you. Don’t watch any TV at all for 30 days. In the last two and a half years, I have only watched TV at friends’ or family members’ houses, the gym or a bar. I know that I will never go back to paying for TV. I have no reason to. You couldn’t even pay me to have it at my house. I feel agitated when I’m at someone’s house and the TV is blaring. It is actually offensive to me now because of the ever-present noise, the tasteless advertising and how people just accept what they are fed through various shows or news channels. Not to mention the constant bombardment of marketing campaigns and organized marketing strategies.
There is no rational thinking involved at all with TV watching. Networks give you information you could live without as "breaking news," reality shows and TV characters set bad examples for children and the rest of our society and the characters in shows do not accurately represent America. Television contributes to the problem of people desiring things they cannot realistically have, whether it’s expensive cars, houses or a lifestyle where everything is given out for free. I do not miss having TV in my house.
My favorite part about not having television is the time I save. I don’t notice the time I save anymore because it’s become natural. But when I compare myself to others, I know how much more productive I am. Even now, there still aren’t enough hours in a day to get everything done. But I can’t imagine wasting two or three hours a day in front of a TV. In the past two and a half years I began reading more, becoming more organized, following a better workout routine, eating better and am keeping a better financial plan. Most of all, I have more free time for the people who are most important to me. I have become more aware of my life and myself. I make time for planning, talking with friends and family and making goals.
There is also the smaller benefit of saving a little money each month. A cable bill can cost $100 or more. When I had TV, my bill was about $80 per month. Now this money is spent on other things more important to me. It is not thrown away on mindless television. Canceling my cable service was one of the best choices I ever made and I know I will never go back to paying for TV. More and more people and families are making the same choice, and you should too.
First, I recommend you try eliminating television from your life entirely for 30 days. You will notice the changes. I hope you think about these benefits and make the wise choice of saying goodbye to your monthly cable or satellite bills like I did.
